IOT Update

16th January 2026

It is with sincere appreciation that we announce that, after 17 years of outstanding service, Professor Andrew Messenger will be stepping down as President of The Institute of Trichologists

Throughout his tenure, Professor Messenger has led the Institute with exceptional vision, integrity, and unwavering commitment to its mission. His guidance played a significant role in strengthening the Level 5 Diploma in Clinical Trichology, securing Professional Standards Authority (PSA) accreditation, expanding partnerships, and advancing the Institute’s standing both nationally and internationally. The impact of his presidency will be felt for many years to come.

We are pleased to confirm that Professor Messenger will continue his association with the Institute in the esteemed role of President Emeritus, ensuring his expertise, insight and guidance remain part of the IOT’s future.

Professor Andrew Messenger comments;

“When, back in 2009, I had by arm twisted by John Gray and Marilyn Sherlock to take on the presidency of the IOT I had little idea about what I was letting myself in for. Now, looking back on those 17 years, I feel greatly enriched by the experience and honoured by the Institute for allowing me the opportunity in the first place and then for letting me stay so long. Much change for the good has taken place over this time, particularly in terms of developing trichology as a mainstream profession. Registration with the IoT is now accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. The training has improved dramatically – the IOT now awards a nationally accredited Level 5 diploma in Clinical Trichology and CPD has become an essential feature of working as a trichologist.

From my perspective the closer links that have developed between dermatologists and trichologists have been particularly gratifying to see. We have similar skill sets but they are not the same and working together can only be to the benefit of our patients. One area where trichology does have largely untapped potential is in research. There are a few notable trichologist researchers and there is an increasing presence by trichologists at hair research events. This trend that needs to be encouraged. It will enhance the profile of the profession as well as contributing to knowledge that benefits patients.

My contribution in all of this has been pretty small but I have learned much and made many good friends. There have been occasional bumps along the way but even these have led to positive outcomes. I hope I will be able to stay in touch and contribute if I can. I wish my successor, Sharon Wong, every success and I have no doubt she will make an excellent president.

And thank you to all for making me feel so welcome.”

We are sure you’d all like to join us as we extend our heartfelt thanks to Professor Messenger for his remarkable contributions and many years of dedicated service.

We wish him every success and fulfilment in the next chapter of his professional and personal journey, and invite all registrants to join us in expressing our sincere gratitude for his outstanding leadership at The Institute of Trichologists.
