Important – Please Read
At present, there is very little regulation to help protect patients regarding qualifications required in determining who can administer invasive treatments/injectables. There are consultations in process which mean this SHOULD come into place within the next few years.
At present, microdermabrasion is considered a beauty therapist led procedure, but the ‘general consensus’ is that PRP and injectables certainly shouldn’t be. The outcome of this is likely to conclude that only trained medical providers (Drs/Nurses) may perform such treatments. It is expected that, as part of the new regulatory framework, these guidelines will become regulation in 2025.
Until such regulation is introduced, the IOT’s position on ‘invasive’ procedures will be as follows: we will neither promote or advise any IOT member (excluding Drs/Nurses) to perform such procedures; or will we attempt to restrict any IOT member from performing such treatments. We will not include ‘invasive’ procedures on any IOT member listings (excluding Drs/Nurses) on the register, or award CPD points for courses that provide certificates\training in order to practise invasive procedures (but we will award CPD points for educational courses designed to teach the benefits of such procedures for hair loss/thinning).
We will update our guidance in this area when a new regulatory framework is introduced.
Thank you – we know that we all regard the safety of patients as utmost.
